I found this nice piece of olive with what was pretty much a big hole in it. If I cut out the deep bark hole there would have been nothing left so it was time to make a feature of it.
Once the outside shape of the bowl was completed I hollowed out the inside using a scraper. A scraper that I then broke as it caught as the hole punched through, this could well have been avoided by running the lathe at a higher speed.
I finished the vase with a simple coat of varnish to help the grain stand out
